Matthew joined Drax in 2011 and initially assumed responsibility for biomass and coal procurement and supply. He was also Chairman of the Drax upstream biomass business in the USA from instigation in 2011 until 2106. From 2015 he was responsible for Communications, Public Affairs and for the teams covering both Sustainability and Regulation and Markets under the umbrella of Executive Director of Corporate Affairs. In all these roles he reported to the Drax CEO, Dorothy Thompson, and was a member of the Group Executive Committee.
Matthew moved to the part time role of Group Special Advisor in April 2017. In this capacity he chairs the board of the Drax owned Billington Bioenergy and represents Drax as a Director on the board of The Sustainable Biomass Program (SBP).
Matthew was previously Director, Energy Biomass and Director, Overseas Wood & Biomass Sourcing with UPM-Kymmene, Finland. Prior roles include a period as Managing Director of Forestal Oriental, based in Uruguay with responsibility for plantation management and wood supply for the start-up of the Fray Bentos pulp mill. Until 2006 Matthew was Managing Director of Tilhill, the UK’s largest private forest management and timber harvesting business.
Matthew has an Honours degree in forestry from Aberdeen University and an MBA from Strathclyde. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Foresters (and currently a member of the Institute’s governing Council) and a Member of the Society of Chartered Environmentalists.
